Valentines Day is fast approaching, it is now less than a month away. Valentines Day is always celebrated on February 14th worldwide. Like Christmas it is a day that never moves. Very few people know that there are in fact eleven different saints named Valentine that are recognised by the Catholic Church and three of them have February 14th as their day of recognition.
It seems most likely that our tradition of making this a holiday to celebrate romantic love relates to the Saint Valentine who was killed when he defied the Roman Emperor Claudius II and performed secret marriages for young lovers. The day was then first known to be associated with romance by the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer who wrote a poem about love birds representing the engagement of King Richard II and his fiancé Anne of Bohemia in the middle ages (Richard II is reported to have died on February 14th 1400)
Valentines Day then continued to grow in popularity and began to resemble the modern day version by the 17th century, when it became the custom for lovers to exchange gifts and notes. Pre-printed Valentines Day cards became available in the 18th century and retailers began supplying special gifts for gentlemen to give to their ladies by the middle of the 19th century.
Flowers, chocolates and jewelry have always been amongst the most popular gifts and the day is also associated with the most marriage proposals of any single day of the year.
